They are also practicing some very important skills that will become a foundation for algebra in the years ahead. We have started to write expressions with variables to represent patterns we see in class. For example, instead of saying "multiply a number by 3 and subtract 1," the students now know they can write 3y -1. Starting next week, we will also investigate equations and learn how to create equivalent equations by doing the same thing to both sides of the equal sign.
