Our next unit in math is about multiplying and dividing with decimal numbers. Students have already been practicing estimating before they calculate so they can check to see if their answer is reasonable and has the decimal in the correct spot. We have also reviewed the rules for adding and subtracting with decimal numbers.
Yesterday students learned how to calculate tax, tip, commissions, shipping fess, and sale prices. They became "human cash registers" and realized how useful these skills could be when they go shopping in stores or eat in a restaurant.
Staring tomorrow, we will learn the rules for dividing with decimal numbers. We will also try to solve some word problems with decimal amounts. All of this is covered in Chapter 9 of the textbook.
If all goes according to plan, we will have a quiz about decimal operations on Tuesday, March 10th.
Here is a website that allows students to practice all of the decimal operations.

Inspired by "The Price is Right," we have been playing an interactive version of the "Grocery Game" on the projector. Students have to purchase items to reach a target price (for example between $50-$52). This allows them to practice multiplying and adding decimal numbers to reach their goal!
