This week the students in grade six are exploring microscopes in science class. They have learned the names of the parts of a microscope, how to use it safely, how to change the lenses, and how to focus on an object properly. Continuing our practice of working like a scientist, the students are developing the ability to draw detailed diagrams and write specific observations when using this handy tool.
I have also taught the students about the key features of cells: the organelles. Ask your son or daughter about a nucleus, the cytoplasm, or my personal favourite, the endoplasmic reticulum. They should become familiar with these terms over the next several weeks. Our microscopes will not allow us to see these tiny organelles inside of cells, but we might be able to see a grouping of plant cells (and their cell walls) in our next lab. Stay tuned!
