Hello Parents,
I hope your children are starting to settle into the grade six routine. I have very much enjoyed meeting each student in grade six; they are a wonderfully enthusiastic and kind group!
I wanted to let you know what we will be studying in math starting this week. Our first unit is about place value. The students will be learning about very large numbers (millions and billions) and very small numbers (down to the millionth spot after a decimal). We will talk about how to read and write these numbers, compare them, and round them. Then we will solve real-life problems involving very large and very small numbers. These topics are covered in Chapter 2 of the math textbook.
Throughout this unit we will also be reviewing foundational math skills such as long division and multiplication. The students will need to use these skills throughout many of the upcoming units in grade six math.
I will be starting to give math homework this week. If you are looking for extra practice for your son or daughter beyond the homework, here is a website where you can create worksheets with different levels of difficulty to review adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.

The students in grade six each thought of a time during the summer when they used math.
There were so many great examples including shopping, baking, converting money, packing for camp, measuring distances, and creating schedules!
